![]() | The large hats which had dominated the first decade of the twentieth century had gone. These high crown hats were worn over the more modest hairstyles which then came into fashion. A loop handle often hangs over one side I presume because the underlying hairstyle was no longer able to take a hat pin. The High Crown hat followed the death of King Edward which was ironically also the death of the large Edwardian hat. This hat appeared as the cartwheel hat reached its maximum size. The wide bulky hairstyles required to support large hats were being replaced by simpler more easily maintained styles. Often sporting a bow or other feature as did its contemporary the Coronet hat together they paved the way for the domed crown hat which followed in the Great War. |
