Wide horizontal striped aprons are forever associated with butchers.
Certainly they belong to the food retailing sector. Striped aprons were also worn in the dairy and grocery trades. The lad on the left has a notebook in his right hand and possibly others in his breast pocket. His style of headwear is known as a "butchers boy" cap. It would suggest he is a delivery boy for a butcher or grocer. The lad on the right wears a warehouse coat over a starched collar and tie with a white fabric apron. This suggests he is a shop assistant in a trade such as an ironmongers or similar. | ![]() |
