The two men in this snapshot have red discs sewn on their right trouser leg. They would also have similar discs sewn on their back. This marked them as Prisoners of War. Most Italian POWs could be trusted to work outside the prison camp on farms or gardens. Some British families befriended the POWs. The red discs were an identification mark. Another photograph not here, shows the man on the left digging and the small boy "helping" with a seaside spade.
